Globe Pillow Crochet Along Part II

Now I'm going to start on the points.  I will be crocheting each point separately.  I'm going to do an example of how to read the chart for the points for right handers and left handers.

You can find Part I of the Globe Pillow here.

I recommend reading all the instructions before you start.

First cut the green yarn, leaving a tail for weaving in.

Right Handers

I'm going to write out the pattern for the first point.  If it helps you to write out the other points this is how it will look. Start with the point on the chart on the right hand side.  I've numbered the stitches on the top part of the chart to reflect the stitches just for the point. (We are still working with the top chart (Northern Hemisphere)).  The symbol --- --- in 2 squares side by side stands for sc2tog, or single crochet 2 stitches together.

Row 1: Since you just finished Row 12 of the beginning part of the chart, you can continue on with the Blue Yarn. You will be crocheting from right to left.  Ch 1, sc in same stitch and in next 8 scs, sc2tog (the last 2 blue squares with this symbol --- ---.) ch 1, Turn.  (10 scs)

for sc2tog insert hook in 1st st and pull up a loop then insert hook in next st and pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook

Then yarn over hook and pull through all three loops on the hook
Row 2: Sc in same stitch and in next 7 scs, Sc2tog, ch 1, Turn. (9 scs)

Row 3:  Sc in same stitch and in next 6 scs, Sc2tog, ch 1, Turn. (8 scs)

Rows 4 to 6:  Sc in same stitch and in next 7 scs, ch 1, Turn. (8 scs)

Row 7: Sc in same stitch and in next 5 scs, start next sc, add Green Yarn, do 2 more scs, ch 1, Turn. (8 scs)

Row 8:  Start sc2tog, add Blue Yarn, do 2 scs, sc2tog, ch 1, Turn. (6 scs)

Row 9: Sc in same stitch and in next 2 scs, start next sc, add Green Yarn, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, start last sc, add Green Yarn, ch 1, Turn. (6 scs)

Row 10: Sc in same sc and in next 3 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, start next sc add Green Yarn, ch 1, Turn. (6 scs)

Row 11: Sc in same sc, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, start next sc, add Green Yarn, do 2 scs then start next sc, add Blue Yarn ch 1, Turn. (6 scs)

Row 12: Sc2tog, do 2 scs, sc2tog, ch 1, Turn. (4 scs)

Rows 13 to 14:  Sc in same sc and next 3 scs, ch 1, Turn. (4 scs)

Row 15: Sc2tog, sc in next 2 scs, ch 1, Turn. (3 scs)

Row 16: Sc2tog, sc in next sc, ch 1 Turn. (2 scs)

Row 17: Sc2tog, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing seams later.  Also cut a long tail of the green yarn for sewing later.  To keep the yarn strands out your your way, roll them up and pin them to the point. (1sc)

When you start the next the next point insert the hook in the next stitch beside the point.  All of the points from now have 9 stitches (8 scs and one sc2tog) on the bottom of the point.

Left Handers

I'm going to write out the pattern for the first point.  If it helps you to write out the other points this is how it will look.  Start with the point on the left hand side of the Top Chart (Northern Hemisphere).  You will be crocheting left to right.  The symbol --- --- in 2 squares side by side stands for sc2tog, or single crochet 2 stitches together.

Row 1: Since you just finished Row 12 of the beginning part of the chart, you can continue on with the Blue Yarn. You will be crocheting left to right.  Ch 1, Sc2tog, sc in next 8 scs, ch 1, Turn. (9 scs)

Sc2tog, insert hook in 1st st, pull up a loop, insert hook in 2nd st, pull up a loop, 3 loops on  the hook.  Yarn over hook, pull through all three loops on hook.

Row 2: Sc in same st and in each sc across, ch 1, Turn. (9 scs)

Row 3: Sc2tog, sc to end, ch 1, Turn. (8 scs)

Row 4 to 6: Sc in same sc and in each sc across, ch 1, Turn. (8 scs)

Row 7: Sc in same sc, sc in next 2 scs, start next sc, add Green Yarn, start next sc, ad Blue Yarn, sc in next 2 scs, start next sc, add Green Yarn,. ch 1, Turn. (8scs)

Row 8: Sc2tog, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, do 3 scs, sc2tog, ch 1, Turn. (6 scs)

Row 9: Sc in same st and in next sc, start next sc, add Green Yarn, sc in next 3 scs, ch 1, Turn. (6 scs)

Row 10: Sc in same sc and in each sc across, ch 1, Turn. (6 scs)

Row 11: Sc in same sc, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, do next sc, start next sc, add Green Yarn, sc in next sc, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, ch 1, Turn. (6 scs)

Row 12: Sc2tog, sc in next 2 scs, Sc2tog, ch 1, Turn. (4 scs)

Rows 13 to 14: Sc in same sc and in next 3 scs, ch 1, Turn. (4 scs)

Row 15:  Sc in same sc and in next sc, Sc2tog, ch 1, Turn. (3 scs)

Row 16: Sc in same sc, Sc2tog, ch 1, Turn. (2 scs)

Row 17: Sc2tog, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing seams later.  Also cut a long tail of the green yarn for sewing later.  To keep the yarn strands out your your way, roll them up and pin them to the point. (1 sc)

Roll up the ends of the yarn and pin them to the point to keep them out of your way while you do the rest of the points.

Insert the hook in the next st to the right of the point you just made to make the next point.

Here are the finished points for the top chart.  I split the picture so you could see the piece better.

Now you're ready to start on the bottom chart (Southern Hemisphere).  Go back to Part I if you need some help starting that chart.

Kae just sent me this picture of the Chicago Black Hawk afghan she made for her son and daughter-in-law for a housewarming gift.  She cross stitched the design instead of crocheting it.  I think it looks GREAT, and I love what she did with the border.

Globe Pillow or Ball Crochet Along

Top Chart
Bottom Chart

I'm going to try something a little different with this post.  It's going to be a Crochet Along.  If you would like to do it with me email me at crochetparfaitpg@yahoo.com and I will send you the charts. Let me know which format you would like it in (Excel--editable, Adobe pdf--print it out and tape it together, or Png--picture)

The following instructions are for crochet, but you can also knit this chart.  Check out Miaou's Globe. You can find here comments about the pattern here.

I suggest you read the whole post before starting.

Materials
  • Worsted weight yarn, blue, green and white
  • H Hook
  • Polyfil stuffing
  • Tapestry needle
Abbreviations

ch(s)--chain(s)     sc(s)--single crochet(s)   st(s)--stitch(es)    YO--Yarn over

This is how to start the chart and change color.
I'm starting with the top chart.
With an H hook and Blue yarn I chained 122 chs.  That is one more than the number of stitches for the chart which is 121.  You will be crocheting right to left if you are a right hander (left to right for lefties) so look at the bottom of the top chart on the right hand side.  You will start by inserting the hook in the second ch from the hook and doing 12 scs in Blue Yarn, start the next sc. (insert hook, YO, pull up a loop)

If you are crocheting right handed this first row will be on the wrong side of your piece so you will carry the yarn on this side, pull the Blue Yarn to this side. (If you are a lefty you will be on the right side so carry the yarn on the back of this row).

Loop the Green Yarn over the hook and pull it through the two loops.

Then do 3 scs, start the next sc and add the Blue Yarn the same way you added the Green yarn. Since there is only one Blue sc, you will just start the sc and then add the Green Yarn.

Keep following the chart in this manner.  It's a good idea to count the number of squares for each color change before you start it.  Always do one less full sc and then start the sc on the last st before the color change.

Carry the yarn on the wrong side about every 5 stitches when you aren't using it.

You do this by catching the unused yarn under a stitch.

This is how to read the chart. (I'm only going to do this for the first 2 rows, if you need to write it out this will be your guide)

Right Handers
With Blue Yarn Ch 122. (start at the bottom right hand side of the top chart and start reading toward the left side of the chart )

Row 1: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, do 12 scs, start next sc, add Green Yarn, do 3 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, start sc, add Green Yarn, do 5 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, start sc, add Green Yarn, start sc, add Blue Yarn, do 17 scs, start next sc add Green Yarn, do 11 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, do 18 scs, start next sc add Green Yarn, do 12 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, sc to end of ch, ch 1. Turn (121 scs)

Now you are following the chart from left to right
Row 2: Sc in same st and in next 31 sts, start next sc add Green Yarn, do 10 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, do 19 scs, start next sc add Green Yarn, do 11 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, do 16 scs, start next sc, add Green Yarn, do 1 sc, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, do 1 sc, start next scs, add Green Yarn, do 2 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, sc to end of row, ch 1. Turn (121 scs)

You will read Row 3 right to left and then Row 4 left to right and so on.

Left Handers
With Blue Yarn Ch 122. (start at the bottom left hand side of the top chart and start reading toward the right side of the chart )

Turn. (121 scs)

Now you are following the chart from right to left
Row 2: Sc in same st, sc in next 19 scs, start next sc, add Green Yarn, do 2 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, do 1 sc, start next sc, add Green Yarn, do 1 sc, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, do 16 scs, start next sc, add Green Yarn,  do 11 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, do 19 scs, start next sc, add Green Yarn, do 10 scs, start next sc, add Blue Yarn, sc to end of row, ch 1. You will read Row 3 left to right and then Row 4 right to left and so on.

Continue on up to row 12.  My next post will address how to do the rows after that. (I cut the picture into pieces so you can see it better.)
